Hibernation Disappears

Not Myself

New member
Second try: Hibernation has been disappearing recently. I can restart it using the forum's tutorial, but I'd like to solve the real problem if possible.

Example:

1. Last night, I noticed computer and monitor were both awake long after they should have been, so I put them to sleep manually.

2. This morning, around 0500, computer and monitor were asleep, and that was after Malwarebytes had awakened the computer and run its scheduled 0445 scan.

3. i had to restart the computer three times this morning to get it to start properly for reasons unknown/unknowable. After the third start, hibernation was working.

4. An hour or two later, I checked the start button/shutdown, and, yes, hibernation was no longer showing. As in previous such incidents, when I checked the power settings, hibernation did not even appear s an option.

5. As of an hour or so after enabling hibernation once again, it is still working. Hibernation did remain active for perhaps two weeks after the last disappearance episode.

Any ideas, incantations, threats of my using my ten-pound sledge hammer, that might fix this anomaly?

How do youo determine that hibernation is OFF?

When you've decided that it is off, then:
go to an elevated command prompt and type:
cd /d %systemdrive%\
attrib -r -h -s hiberfil.sys
dir hiberfil.sys
take a note of the size and the date/time stamp.

If you got a "file not found" message after doing the dir statement, then:
you have, at the moment no hibernate file.
type following command: powercfg - h on
type EXIT
RESTART
your computer.

Thanks for responding; it is appreciated.

I determine that hibernation is off when the computer fails to go to sleep, and hibernation does not appear in either the Start button shutdown dialog nor in the Control Panel Power Options.

As for the rest of your instructions, I've printed them and shall apply them when/if the problem arises yet again.

I g=had been away for some five hours, and was a bit dismayed to find the computer awake when I returned, but my wife said that she had awakened it to try to fix a problem (that could not be fixed that way, but then she is not overly computer oriented,) so hibernation worked after I restarted it before leaving (and still appears in the start button shutdown dialog.

1. With hibernation appearing where expected, out of curiosity I ran your cmd instructions, which replied, "Unable to change attribute - C:\hiiberfil.sys, and, not surprisingly, then said could not find the file.

2, I then searched for hiberfil.sys using AgentRansack, which reported hiberfil.sys C:\ , 6,272,940 , 29-May-12 10:03:08. (That time stamp may be when I restarted hibernation this morning, but I'm not certain.)

It is curious to me that cmd.exe cannot find the file but AgentRansack can. There may well be a simple, valid explanation, but this manner of things is not in my toolbox; I can run commands, such as cmd.exe, but that does not mean that I understand them, I can only do as instructed and hope that whatever it is that I did was the correct thing to have done.

Quickly, as I have other things to do:

1 .8 MB.
2. I have tried at least three or four times to update my computer specs here, saving what I've entered every time, only for the system to fail to keep any of that data, so I gave up trying.
3. I usually right-click on cmd.exe, choose run as admin; just tried your method, got same failure to change atributes. (Just realized that when I used CTRl-Shift-Enter, I am don't get a Yes button, it just opens the cmd prompt. Is t that because I don't have UAC enabled?)
4. Shall try rebooting, etc., tomorrow.
5.Thanks for sticking with me.
6. Everything else...

(I just changed Explorer to show system files, which then showed hiberfil.sys right where AgentRansack found it.)

After some sleep, reread the procedure I gave for filling your system specs, especially the part about clicking on the SAVE button

Tomorrow I'll give you another way of running cmd.exe as administrator because evidently the procedure is not being carried out correctly.

The procedure, when carried out correctly, can not fail.

First reply for today, which, while it may appear to be snide, is not meant to be anything more than a statement of fact: I've been using PCs for twenty-nine years, I know how to click on a Save button, and i know that this system has said that my data has been saved, and that is not correct. Nonetheless, I will try again later today.

After all, last week, I managed to finally figure out why I could not install a wireless printer: The first printout of the printer settings gave me a MAC address that was not the actual MAC address of the printer. Once I noticed, during the installation process, what the correct address is, the install process worked correctly. Further weirdness was that, after I did install the printer, I printed out the three-page printer settings document again, which that time showed the correct MAC address.

Second comment for today: I just entered, once again, my system specifications, and, yes, I pressed on the Save button, which indicated that my information had been updated.

A moment later, I was returned to the very page where I had entered my information, and there I saw that the entire page had, as previously, reverted to showing, instead of my computer details, my forum screen name.

This has happened every single time that I have attempted to enter my data.

1. Computer went to sleep as scheduled last night.

2. Computer woke up, ran scheduled SuperAntispyware at 0445 this morning, as scheduled.

3. Computer went back to sleep after step 2, as it was supposed to, and was asleep when I got to the computer room around 0500 this morning.

4. A few minutes ago, I checked the Start Button/Shutdown area, where Hibernation was not showing.

5. After running powercfg - h on , hibernation reappeared without my having rebooted the computer.

Thus, once again, I can only ask if anyone has any idea as to what might be removing hiberfil.sys from my computer, and, if so, what I might do to stop this from recurring.

===

Fifty-four minutes after posting this message, hiberfil.sys is gone again. I've made no changes to the computer, just done some on-line message reading. Hibernation was working perhaps thirty minutes ago. This problem started perhaps two months ago at most.
