This pertains to spinner hard drives NOT SSD's.

Windows defragger is quite sufficient and should be used.
Let me state it more strongly...
Unless you have an SSD drive, it is very important to use some defrag program. If you don't, your computer will (over time) start slowing down... Eventually you will experience lots of issues...
I can't think of a single disadvantage to defragging a Hard Disk Drive. For Windows 7 I say use the built defragger. It is set to run automatically be default anyways so you don't even have to worry about most of the time. On XP and earlier Windows versions I would say use a 3rd party defragger.
Windows will defrag with the built-in tool in the background. Prior to having an SSD, I honestly hardly EVER ran a defrag process manually.
Single disadvantage is that it will, depending on the defragger, slowly eat away at your volume shadow copy (aka system restore space).
hmmm
so is there a sign ??
that i need to do a defrag??
I agree with the first thing you said. Now, on to the second thing. Yes, your computer will slow down if not defragged, but it won't expierience issues (unless you are talking about performance issues) Freagmentation does not affect the stability of your computer, but it does affect the performance of your computer. I just wanted to clear that up for you:)
