Everything running slow

Hello, I am a first time poster, running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit SP1 on a Lenovo Intel 7i 860 2.80GHz with 8 GB RAM dual-channel DDR3 531 MHz

Everything is running very slow after I tried and failed to install Ubuntu on a VMware Virtual Player. VMware suggested an update which I attempted but then everything slowed to a crawl. I uninstalled VMware but the problem persists.

I was unable to do a system restore. I also tried to install a Windows Update to Windows Defender and that failed after running Troubleshooter which said it fixed two problems. Windows Update says the update was installed but It does not appear in the log.

I have run multiple malware scans including Malwarebytes and Eset Online and the few things that were found have been deleted but I suspect they were false positives. I ran Scannow and there are no integrity violations. I ran PC Pitstop Optimize. I ran Farber Service Scanner. Nothing. I ran What's Running which shows "system process" at 98%+ which they say is sometimes associated with Registry errors. I also checked the startup files.

The CPU is running constantly.

I am at the point where I wonder if there is anything else to try short of a Windows Repair Install or even (shudder) a Clean Install?

After using Pitstop Optimizer their is no way of knowing what has been changed.
If running sfc /scannow 3 times and things are still broke I would try Repair and install.

I ran sfc Scannow once but it took 30 hours to run. For what it's worth, even though I am not running Chrome right now, a pop up appeared with the message "A script on this page may be busy.... Chrome://webclipper3-common/content/libs/Evernote/FF/core/Clipstorer.js:17"

Wow 30 hours is unheard of. My fast computer takes less than 10 min. and my slow computer less than 15 min. Things I would do if it was my computer.
1. Hide the Ubantu c/d where I couldn't find it.
2. Remove all unnecessary things plugged into the computer and only have the drive you want windows on hooked up.
3. Try a repair and install and if that doesn't work a Clean install.
