You won't ever free it all up. You have a 64 bit system, you can buy more ram and it can use that. 32 bit system can only handle 4 GB.

The board will only do 2 x 2gb so need to free some up as that amount reserved is just bad.

You have a Bad Install of win 7. The system is reserving 1.2GBs for hardware. That is not right.

My system has a Hardware Reserve of 2MB. Although I have 16GBs or RAM installed I don't think that makes any difference.

You may need to purchase a newer motherboard if you wish to utilise more of the memory available.

They're running a 64-bit Windows.

No were in any of the OPs posts does he say he is actually running a 64bit version of Windows 7.

He does say it is a 64bit PC but not that he is running 7 64bit OS.

Also if the motherboard is one that can run a 64bit CPU it is very strange that it can only have 4GBs of RAM installed.

I was going to say the same thing. A motherboard that only allows 4 GB would not support 64 bit I don't think.

I have a motherboard with a 64-bit processor and only 4GB RAM, but my motherboard is able to handle up to 8GB RAM.

Yes, sorry I assumed that since they mentioned that they had a 64-bit PC, then they meant they had a 64-bit operating system :o

The system memory that is reported in the System Information dialog box in Windows Vista is less than you expect if 4 GB of RAM is installed

And besides being notorious for hiding settings in the bios that home builders take for granted, OEM's (Dell, HP, etc) are also known for limiting the amount of ram as well.

Yes as to the Stated Amount of RAM the system can use. But if it has a chipset version that can handle more RAM then you can use more RAM. Case in point is Apple with there MBP line. Even with the newest models they state the system can only have 8GBs of RAM installed when the Intel chipset can have 16GBs. The reason behind this discrepancy is because at the time of Release there wasn't 8GBs modals available. But I have never seen the OEM actually Limiting the amount of RAM that can be installed if the chipset actually support it. It is just they haven't tested the system with that much RAM. No test No statement that it can support it.

No real need for me to reply, although I am. No real need to fill in my system specs. This isn't a question by me. I'm not having any problems with my system. I was trying to help someone else.

Thanks for responding and clarifying things :)

We prefer if our senior members complete their system specs as it helps persuade new members to follow suit, and it also allows other senior members to know that someone has the same or similar hardware as them or someone they are helping, and may be able to give a relevant answer to an issue with the hardware.

It is a personal choice for all members and is not compulsory, of course :)
