Windows 7: Whole windows freezes after graphics driver update! :(

07 Dec 2012   #11

windows 7 ultimate 64bit

I have tried everything but no luck: reformatted windows, reinstalled card, re-plugged it.
Now I can't even go on my desktop, white lines on the welcome screen, then the desktop sound plays, then the whole pc freezes with annoying sound in the earphones.

Please help me

Windows 7 32 bit

Hi I've been having the same problem as you with a blue screen code 116 unless I uninstall the display drivers using windows in safe mode, but as soon as I re-install the drivers and restart windows in normal mode it blue screens again, was wondering if you or the "tech guy" that come round found the problem. I'm new to this forum, and joined hoping to find the cure for this problem. Any help appreciated..

Which WIndows 7 drivers have your been using? Did you enable Automatically deliver drivers via Windows Update (Step 3) then Check for Updates to see what driver Windows 7 wants?

What is the exact card make/model? Have you tried all drivers from its Support downloads webpage? If it's an older card, have you tried installing the driver in Compatibility Mode?

Windows 7 32 bit

8.850.0.0 is the driver version for the card. It's a Radeon 4870x2 it works in normal mode and safe mode if I uninstall the drivers in safe mode but don't know what to do next as I don't have that much experience fault finding and fixing computers. I'm an electrician so I like to think I'm technically minded or think logically but to be honest I haven't got a clue what to do and was hoping I would get some help from the trusty internet.. Thank you for the quick reply and your time.. Any help appreciated. As for the windows driver how do I find that out??

Is it only the latest driver you've had trouble with? If so roll back to the previous driver which worked. This is found in Device Manager>click on Display Adapter>Driver tab and then choose Roll Back Driver first, if that fails try another from Update driver>Browse>Let me choose.

What drivers and other Updates does Windows Update offer when you do what I suggested above which you did not respond to? I can't know what you've already done if you don't reply to every step given.

If no driver can be made to work, uninstall the card physically, blow any dust out of its ports, then carefullly reinstall it under a very bright light taking all the time needed to know its perfectly seated.
