Wish to clean up windows 7 and have too many programs starting up that may not be necessary. I do not know which ones are essential. Help please.

You really only "need" a couple of start up programs. What exactly depends on you and how you use your machine. Personally I only have 3 programs starting on my machine, Anti-Virus and a couple of cpu monitors/wifi utilities.

Most tech enthusiasts would never run the bloated factory preinstall which throttles Windows 7 native performance. Consider a Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 using only the tools and methods which assure getting and keeping a perfect install.

Until then you can Clean Up Factory Bloatware.

Unnecessary startup programs and services can be deactivated by the 'System Configuration' in Windows 7.

    1. Type 'msconfig' or 'system configuration' in the start menu.

    2. Open the correct search result. If you typed 'msconfig', you'll have to click the 'msconfig' option under the 'programs' section. If you typed 'System configuration', you will have to click the 'system configuration' option under the 'programs' section. However, they both bring the same dialog.

    3. Go to the 'startup' tab of the System configuration dialog box that opens up when the previous step is followed.

There, you will see the list of programs and services that start upon booting of Windows. You can mark them or unmark them as needed. Then Click 'Apply', afterwards click 'OK'.
