Performance comparison btw. Windows 7 Home Basic versus Home Premium

    Hi
Please advice on the performance comparison between
    - Windows 7 Home Basic versus
    - Windows 7 Home Premium
assuming if both uses the same 8GB RAM.

Just a hearsay...that Windows 7 Home Basic is lagging behind Windows 7 Home Premium in terms of performance assuming if both uses the same 8GB RAM. Please confirm whether this is true or not.

By the way, how to activate the Windows Aero in Windows 7 Basic???

Hello cheesum and welcome to Seven Forums.

Last question first. This tutorial may help enable Aero. Please note that there is no way to enable transparency on Windows Home Basic.

Aero - Enable in Unsupported Editions of Windows 7

As far as performance, I have not been able to find any specific "speed" tests to say one way or the other.

Difference Between Windows 7 Home Basic and Home Premium | Difference Between | Windows 7 Home Basic vs Home Premium

But if Basic and Home Premium are run on two identical machines (not just identical RAM, but also identical hard drive/hard drive speed, identical CPU, identical programs and apps installed, etc) I would give a very slight performance advantage to Basic simply because it doesn't have the same amount of features that Home Premium has. Fewer features to load usually equals faster performance. But I think any performance advantage would be so slight it wouldn't make any appreciable difference.

I did find some comments comparing Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional.

Of course, others may completely disagree with my thoughts and that's cool. Healthy discussion and debate is welcomed. :)

    Thanks for the reply.

Just one question. Where can we find patches to enable the full spectrum for Aero for Windows 7 Basic?

    You're welcome. :)

Since Basic does not natively support the full Aero spectrum, all I can suggest is that you try Google. Anything more than that and I'd probably be in violation of the Forum's rule # 6.

ok. Thanks alot for your feedback. :)

By the way, can you help to recommend any GOOD GUIDE to installing SSD on a bone stock laptop (Lenovo IdeaPad Y580) which has Windows 7 HOme Basic factory installed on its HDD?

    Thanks again.

afaik, the only Win 7 flavor that underperforms is Starter (was designed to run on netbooks). All others are exactly the same as far as performance goes.

That is, Basic does not run faster nor slower than Ultimate, although the latter is the more feature-rich (and expensive) of the bunch.

With the upper versions you're only paying for a few extra features that most consumers don't need. To be sure you can Compare Windows 7 Editions - Windows 7 Forums

Not to get into a debate, but... :)

I have two absolutely identical Sony Vaio VPCEB47GM laptops. Both machines have the exact same programs installed and all programs are configured the same. They both have the same RAM, same size HDD, same GPUs, CPUs, even the same motherboards. All individual components are even from the same manufacturer. The only difference between the two machines are the serial numbers for the individual components and one is running 7 Home Premium x64 and the other 7 Pro x64.

The Pro machine consistently boots in 1 minute 05 seconds to 1 minute 15 seconds while the Home Premium boots in 45 - 55 seconds. Boot times were measured from hitting the power button to having a functional desktop. Machines are not on a network and boot times were obtained while machines were disconnected from the internet. I've tried different AC outlets in different rooms with no difference in times.

From this non-scientific "experiment" I've concluded that different versions of Windows 7 do perform differently. And that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Lee the computer that is 10 sec. slower I suggest getting rid of that piece of junk.
Believe it or not I notice boot and shut down time differences just by mute the sound. Just a couple of seconds. I need to get a life.
