I never understood the point of multiple partitions on a disk. OK, Viruses that focus on a drive usually focus on C:\, but drive issues usually take out all partition. EVERY machine I have built had a single partition on the drive[s] because of this. Can you explain?

2. You can have as many partitions on a disk as you like (I think the max. is 128). But you can have only 4 primary partitions. The others must be extended/logical.

On a laptop where you have only one disk, your only option is to put multiple partitions on the same disk.

WRONG! My wife's laptop boots up and has the same Desktop/Docs/Favs/Pics/Etc [Yes I have an ETC folder :P] as the desktop... 1 partition...

But who wants to keep their user folders in the C partition. And what about the recovery partition and the system partition.

I am sure that your wife's laptop has at least 3 partitions (with Windows 7) - even if you only see 1 in Computer. The other 2 are hidden. Look into Disk Management.

OK...Yeah, 3...But she only uses the one [and 4 drives on the server]...

Make sure you take good care of the other two - especially the little 100MB system partition. If you corrupt that, the system won't boot.

What is that 100MB partition used for? If that a swapfile or something?

The 100MB system reserved partition holds the critical boot files, and is also required if you use Bitlocker. Some OEM recovery partitions reference this 100MB system reserved partition during recovery operations.

If you muck around with the 100MB partition, your system dies - unless you move the bootmgr to C - like this: Bootmgr - Move to C:\ with EasyBCD
