    Defrag - use W7, or a 3rd party app?

Back in the day of W95, I remember reading that using certain 3rd party apps to defrag was better than using the stock Win app. I forget why, but does the same hold true today? Is it safe to defrag with the W7 app, or is it better for some reason to use a 3rd party app?

    Thanks!

WIndows 7. It does a very good job and is VSS aware so won't interfere with your system restores.

I recommend using Windows 7 built in defrag. I use it with no problems. Like GeneO has stated it doesn't screw up with Volume Shadow Service.

It does its job well :)

I like Puran free defrag for it's Boot Time defrag which gets at System files that can't be defragged when Win7 is running. I also like the Intelligent Optimizer offered on its Addtional Operations tab which moves Most-Used programs to the outer edge of the HD for faster reads.

I replaced Auslogics with it a year ago and there's no looking back.

Use CCleaner Disk and Registry cleaner first, both approx quarterly unless CC finds more than a gig of schmutz.
