Cannot boot my PC. "BOOTMGR IS MISSING"

Hey Tobias and welcome to SF :),


Clicking sounds and Bad hard disk usually mean only one thing in my experience, New disk time!!
(but dont hold me to that as someone else may have a fix!)

In the meantime:

Try running the chkdsk /f/r command:


Start> type in search cmd then right click cmd at top and run as Administrator.


At the prompt type chkdsk /f/r (note the space between chkdisk and /f/r

sorry yes, you can do it with your recovery disc....my bad :) (think my eyes just scanned to Hard disc Bad!!)


You could also read this and then try this option as your disc may not be totally inaccessable:

Hi again, so I tryed to run the chkdsk thing, and when it was done i restarted the computer and it still gets the message: BOOTMGR IS MISSING.

Btw I forgot to mention earlier that it takes a while (much longer than before my pc died) to detect IDE drives.. I don't know if this is important or not, but thought I would mention it


for the fix you linked, it doesnt fix my problem, since i cant get further than the

Can you tell me if the drive is recognised in the bios?

Since you are unable to run the tests or get into windows and start up repair doesnt work I think your best bet is to replace the drive and reinstall windows ;-(
You could try and re-format the drive but personally I would buy a new drive.

Worth a try to be 100% certain, good suggestion :)

But as he has "The click of Death" which is usually caused by the head being bad and not being able to sense the positioning data...it crashes, the only other things to cause this fault (in my experience) is either not enough power or too much power suppplied (which maybe worth checking out power supply voltages), or the chips gone bad.
