Hi ! I just fixed my HP Pavilion from a hard drive malfunction. I bought my self a WD Scorpio Blue WD6400BPVT SATA 3. And now it`s overheating ! The temp right now is from 75 to 81 celcius on the mainboard. The CPU is on 72 to 82 celcius. And the HD is on 46.
The mainboard usally lays on 50-60 and the cpu on the same. And my old HD was a Toshiba and i was on 10-25- Any help to cool it down ?
With any "overhating" issue counselling is suggested.
But seriously, since it's a laptop the first thing I'd check is to see if the fan is working. Maybe during the hard drive replacement a wire became loose/disconnected. I'd also make sure the laptop didn't get any dust or debris clogging the fan. A can of compressed air can clear out the vents and accumulated dust on the fan blades. (It's recommended that you use a toothpick or Q-Tip to keep the fan blades from spinning while using the compressed air.)
In terms of laptop drives, that is NOT overheating! My old laptop drive typically ran 100 degrees or higher all the time. I was so concerned that I installed a drive temp monitor -- and had to buy the laptop version because the desktop version kept generating temp alarms!
Whether anyone considers that overheating or not, the problem is it wasn't that hot before, and it is now....something happened. Do exactly what Marsmimar said to do and report back.
Do you hear the fan spool up now? If so, it may just be a cleaning issue. Let us know what you find.

New HD is Sata3, is your controller Sata3?
What was the speed of your old drive 7200 same as the new drive?
Is the machine still under warranty?
You might try this after cleaning and inspecting:
I have a dv6 6c10 and it was running hot Core: 60 -70C, HD: ~ 34CGood luck
If you have HP Coolsense (systray or start menu), turn it off and see if your rig runs cooler - mine did.... about 20C cooler
I actually uninstalled it and the HP drive guard and most of the other HP "utilities". There's a tutorial on OEM bloat - check it out after you're done with this issue.

1. The machine was running at 40-50 before the new HD.
2. What you mean with controller ?
3. The old drive were 7200 and now it`s 5400.
4. No, it`s over 1 year old.
Well just a thought did you accidently brush up anything removing the HD sounds like you might have moved something out of place
what about your Air flow did you block any fans or vents you might want to go back in there and try to make room for air and check your fans and the heatsink to make sure it is on secure
Take a can of air and blow your system out too look around for signs of fans not working
I would think your fans or one of them maybe went south after you changed your HD it happens
and since your at it with the air i would go over everything even the psu to clean out all the dust you could just be a bunch of dust bunnies clogging up your flow especially on the Heatsink fins Major killer

HD controllers are part of your mobo - basically IO controllers. You can see them in device manager under the heading IDE ATA / ATAPI controllers.
I checked Device mgr did not tell me the version of the controller on my system, but I think it's SATA II.
Anyway, the thought was that perhaps a difference between drive and controller might be causing the heat (buffering). I looked around and found that no HD reaches the max throughput of even SATA II, so I think the controller question was a red herring.
Seems like the speed is also irrelavant - a higher speed drive generates more heat - but the replacement drive is lower RPM.

Checked the fan wires?
.....I think that the HD is fairly well isolated from the rest of the wiring, at least it is on my DV6. The only other wiring around the HD is the OD cable. You might double check that the HD connector is "snapped" tightly into the port. In other words, reconnect the drive making sure that the cable is inserted firmly into the connector.
Cleaned the vents?
Disabled Coolsense?
Can you hear the fans spin?
I recently updated my Bios trying to solve another issue. The system fired up the fans to full speed (sounded like a jet or vacuum cleaner) - but normally the fans are inactive and quiet. They don't seem to fire up unitl temps reach 60C.
I don't think the updated bios for your machine will change anything in regards to the heat issue.
