    Can't run SFC (error 126?)

So after migrating my entire windows partition over to a new computer (same model, previous one got wet, long story) I've been understandably running into several snags along the way. Yes, I know, I've been a bad boy, and I really should just do a clean win7 install and copy over the programs I need as that would probably fix pretty much everything. You're free to chastise me on that point (I've heard it all already), and I probably will do it eventually, but in the meantime it works well enough for the immediate functions I need it to perform, and so for the time being I'm trying to work with what I've got now.

Most recently I've been having trouble opening notepad.exe, it opens fine from the command prompt when I navigate to system32 and "start notepad.exe" but it doesn't seem to show up when I navigate there in explorer (nor does it show up in any search bars, or the "open with..." menu when I try to open a txt file).

To that end I'm trying to run SFC and I think it could solve my notepad issue and numerous other minor nuisances I've been having of late. But, I've been having some trouble with that too:

"sfc /scannow" returns "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service."

So then I tried "net start trustedinstaller" to get the Modules Installer running but it returned "The Windows Modules Installer service could not be started. A system error has occurred. System error 126 has occurred. The specified module could not be found."

Now what do I do? Any ideas?

Tried running SFC in safe mode, got the same result. Furthermore ran chkdsk /f /r, it found some orphaned chkdsk.logs from 2013 (and couldn't fix them) but nothing else, and still in the same spot.

Followed these directions. It assumes my problem was due to the key HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\Version being missing, but when I navigated there it existed just fine. The ID in the key's name even matched the file in winsxs, or one of them anyway--oddly I found 3 amd64_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf... folders, each with different IDs.

Either way, just to be sure, I took ownership of Component Based Servicing, deleted the key, and remade it just like the directions said. Still no dice, getting the same error.

For what it's worth Windows Update doesn't seem to be working either, like nothing involving TrustedInstaller is functioning correctly.

Worse comes to worse I guess I'll just have to reinstall Windows and copy my data over?

Roy sounds like you have the best idea and that is the reinstall as it certainly looks to be in a bit of a mess. A bit of a pain but it could involve trying all manner of things with no result.

Main thig is that you can get all your data backed up first and personally I keep all of the programs I use as downloads or download them to a stick which makes it easy to reinstall them instead of hunting down them on the net.
