After sleep, hangs for a while

After waking laptop, (Win 7, 64 bit, dual core 2.2Ghz, 4G RAM and 500GHD), it takes about 1-2 minutes for pc to function normally. Before this time, it is as if the pc had a Pentium1 and was struggling to function in the modern world. I have scanned both antivirus and malaware and it is clean.
Is this "normal" and any ideas?

    That is not normal.
What antivirus product are you using?
Just as a test. install MSE.

Good to know it is not normal. I have Avast free--perhaps it is the culprit. Tried installing MSE yesterday, but file could not install -it is corrupt. (I saw that others had this same problem, also perhaps it's part of the hack problem from a few days ago?)

Do you have access to another computer?
If so, you could use the clean computer to download WDO with a USB flash drive:
    What is Windows Defender Offline?

Are you sure it's "Waking from sleep", and not "Resuming from hibernate"?
What you describe is not unusual if it's Resuming from hibernate.
When you Wake the laptop do you see the same screens as you do when you do a cold boot or restart?

Laptops may come pre-configured to use hibernate to minimize battery drain.

If you have a "hack/malware" problem, you need to get that fixed as it could cause any number of problems.

I will try Defender offline. In resuming sleep, it starts from the Windows logo instead of the cold boot, so it's quicker. It's just the lag after leaving the pc off for a while. Now I tried it with hybrid sleep and the same problem.

Well, if it is Resuming from hibernate, it's normal to be slower in my experience.

When I Wake from sleep, it's much faster.

If you put it to sleep, and Wake it up after a few seconds of sleeping, is it faster?

Duh! I allready had Defender and it scanned clean. (But the MSE file is still corrupted in opening and thus cannot use). It starts up quick if it resumes from a very short sleep, but from overnight it is very laggard.

I don't think you have a problem with sleep/hibernate hangs or wake up times.
In Power Options Advanced Settings, you can set hibernate to "never" and see what that does.
You may not want to test this if you are using battery power only over-nite!
I'm assuming you have the laptop plugged in for power.

You may have a malware problem and I suggest you start a new thread in the SF Security forum for the "MSE corrupted / installation" problem.
You might get better help in that forum for the MSE issue.

You could also run a System File Check to see if any issues are found.
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Just to be clear, WDO is not the same as Windows Defender that comes with W7.
