Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit suddenly unusable?

Hi everyone,

I turned on my PC a while ago to find out it isn't working as it should. To put it bluntly, I can't load anything at all without waiting at least 5 minutes. Even loading pages on Chrome take ages - it just sits there saying "waiting for cache" and eventually they load - slowly. I searched the net and tried to access eventviewer to see if there were any problems, but it took my about 30 minutes and it just failed and I gave up (It gave some error like MMC or snap in isn't responding). My CPU and RAM usage are normal - CPU is only about 2 or 3% and RAM is about 14%. Even loading the start menu takes its time. It boots up to the desktop as per usual but as soon as the desktop loads and I try to open a window, it suddenly starts to run slowly.

I've no idea what is causing it at all! I even switched it on earlier in the day and it worked fine. I didn't install or change anything - it was just to send a file to my phone.

Can anyone suggest a fix? My specs are:
  • AMD FX 4170 4.2GHz
  • ATI Radeon HD 6790
  • 8GB RAM
  • Asus M5A97 R2.0
  • 320GB Western Digital HDD

Could my hard drive be failing? I thought that, but I'm typing this thread perfectly fine in safe mode so could it be an issue with Windows itself? I'd rather not reinstall it again since I had to do it late last month due to Windows not booting up.

First thing to try: CHKDSK

Right-click the C drive - Properties - Tools - Error Checking. Check off the two boxes, OK out, and reboot.

This process will take about 3 hours. Let us know if this helped. There are other things that may solve this.

Did you make an image backup when the machine was going well?
