it's likely indexing or scheduled defrag. normal behavior

if you want to tweak it, type in "index" or "defrag" in the start menu search field.

also indexing can be tweaked under "power options" or even services panel.

All of my systems still run fastest on XP 32-bit for the most part. Win7 is fun to play with, but I still prefer XP for raw speed, security, and functionality.

If it lasted a couple of hours then chances are it was a defrag. You can cut down on drive access by using Everything Search free program instead of Windows Search. Everything only works with NTFS since it uses the journaling to detect changes. It does not index. The overhead is negligible.

Just let the computer do its thing for a few hours. After which the initial indexing will tapper off. Several things are occurring after first install, System Restore is creating the first snapshot, Windows Search it populating the initial index (which then uses the journal to update the index), Also defragmentation is probably humming away. Now all these task run in the background while YOU ARE NOT USING THE COMPUTER. When you start using the computer, THEY WILL STOP.

Let the computer do its thing, it will quiet down after the initial period.
