Event ID 36 Volsnap when defragging D drive (data + windows backups)

Hi All,

I have a 2 drive system with C (velicoraptor 150gbwith 75 gbs free) drive containing windows 7 pro 64 bit and programs while D (WD black 640gbs with 300gbs free) drive contains just about all data along with my windows backups (i always keep 3 and renew them each month using of course windows backup).

So can't say when but its been a while when I defrag my drives no problem i do c then d and don't get any error messages. BUT... when i check event viewer i see:

General Tab:

ERROR event id 36 VOLSNAP...

The shadow copies of volume D: were aborted because the shadow copy storage could not grow due to a user imposed limit.

so needless to say i would love to fix this and knowing how 95% of errors I have ever seen in event viewer i was able to fix by coming here (along with picking up great event log cleaner script a year or so back) here i am again.

any help greatly appreciated. just wonder if my backup setup on drive is the cause as i didn't always get this error (but i do now) on drive I have most recent backup in root of D drive since i have no partitions. then i have a BACKUP FOLDER in which i have 2 folders named the dates of BACKUPS they contain.

I have 3 jpegs i hope i can upload that shows the root D layout then the BACKUPS folder layout then the layout of an individual folder containing a backup. I post these as somehow i think this may be cause of issue somehow. As 2 years back i just made one backup into root of D drive and got no volsnap error.

Clickon Start ORB, search on "cmd", then RIGHT-CLICK cmd.exe and "run as Administrator".

At CMD prompt, type:

VSSADMIN LIST SHADOWSTORAGE

That will show you the USED and max allowable ("allocated") space to allow System Restore and System Image (things that need Shadow copy services).

done thank you and uploaded a screen shot.

I have system protection off on D drive (it is on for C drive of course) should I have it on for a backup and data drive?

Uploaded a screen shot of shadow storage command results/sizes so you can see what it is

I assume you need to set system protection ON for D drive since your backups are stored there. This is equivalent to using the vssadmin command to set the max allowable shadowcopy space on a partition/drive.

Also, since you saw no errors during defrag, maybe this is a warning message only???? Meaning the defrag can still go on but less safety in case something happens??

hi jim,

well it shows as error in event viewer with the red x circle not the yellow warning sign.

I turn on system protection and see if that helps. Have plenty of room on drive so thats not issue just never occurred to me a data drive would need it even if it held shadow copies of backups.

thanx

well that may have done it... it was a 640 gb drive wd black i gave it 3% which is 17.89GBsand as shown above I keep 3 back ups one standard in root drive of D just like windows 7 backup defaults too.

Before I run next I will take previous and put in folder by date and then in a "BACKUP" folder. as pictures above show.

Just ran a defrag and it zipped through it faster than normal although I had recently done it and have yet to see anything in event viewer. BTW.... when I setup System Protection on D drive I used same settings as C drive in regards to whats saved. My C drive has 15% but its a 150gb drive.
I will probably leave well enough alone but the screenshot I took shows how I used choices for settings.

I just don't remember this error before although until last year I only kept one backup in root drive of D. So there is a correlation between this. I like a lean mean error free machine and don't mind fixing this stuff.

BTW....have run checkdsc and WD's app for smart drive testing both quick and advanced and was all good. Also ran lates HDTunePro also good all the way around.
