Extremely slow boot after upgrade to 16GB

    HP DV7-7135US

Originally came with 8GB RAM - upgraded to 16GB with exact same timings as original RAM.

BIOS is up to the latest/greatest version.

Since upgrading boot time has been miserably slow. I've since done a complete reload of Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit and installed at the latest drivers from the HP website - boot times are still extremely long.

Original hard drive was a 750GB 5400RPM drive (not a hybrid, not SSD), switching over to a 1TB 5400RPM drive made no difference.

Virtual memory is set to allow Windows to manage.

By the way, booting into Ubuntu takes no more than 15 seconds.

Any suggestions? 3+ minutes to boot into Windows excessive to say the least!

If you drop back to 8GB, does the problem go away? Not a fix, just a test to see what happens.

Actually, yes it does... Drops back to just over a minute. Sorry, I should have mentioned that - was one of the first things I tried.

Also - I did a long memory diagnostic in the HP tools - took over 2 hours but both the old and new memory tested 100% good.

Some motherboards, you take a performance hit going from 2 to 4 sticks of RAM, I wonder.... I have such a board myself, I was not happy because I had 4 sticks, I changed to 2 and got the increase, and both were 8gigs total.

Seems excessive for timings that should be in the microsecond range, but not impossible. JWhipple, does the problem persist with just the new memory (8GB) in the PC? You mentioned it's fine with the old if you remove the new, but what about *just* the new memory?

Just for clarification - this is a laptop - only 2 memory slots.

    Original config was 2x4GB sticks.

    Current config is 2x8GB sticks.

I would think if it's the memory then I'd have issues in Windows, especially while running 4 VMWare virtuals using 2GB each on top of Windows itself - I could be wrong though.

Did you try half, test, then swap and test again? Maybe there is a memory problem even though memtest ran clean.
