windows hangs while opening a drive

i am using windows 7 home premium 64 bit. i have 4 partitions of my hard disk. one of them i mostly use to store music videos and pictures. now windows hangs whenever i try to open videos and picture folders in that drive (it doesn't hang when i open folders in it containing MP3's ). other drives are working well. please help because those pictures are very important for me..

What COULD be causing this if you have set Thumbnails to be displayed in the folders containing pictures and videos. That takes time to scan each of the files and generate the appropriate thumbnail. Furthermore, if there is a corrupted video file, that could cause Windows to hang while trying to scan that file to generate a thumbnail.

I have thumbnails disabled on my pc for that very reason.

thanks for your support, i have disabled my thumbnails, i got access to some of the folder but they behave strangely; once i got the access to one folder the next time i visit it again hangs. as u have mentioned, i think this is being created because of overload, i have about 23 GB of pictures in that drive. they were in a single folder earlier which have some sub-folders, i tried some times and managed to scatter them through different folders. any other option to ease up the processor while going through that drive?

The delay is because Kaspersky is scanning the files you're trying to open.

I'm assuming by a "hang", you mean a delay of a minute or two?

Kaspersky is very intrusive. It's constantly ON, doing its job.

If it's on a hard drive not in use all the time, some of them spin down when not in use to save on wear and tear, called parking, I get a few seconds of lag on using those parked drives when they next get accessed, just something else to consider.

OP, I do hope you have indexing turned off on that drive with the pictures, also.

Right click the drive icon in Windows Explorer and go into properties, it's the check box at the bottom of the General tab.

it was turned on, i unchecked that after you asked, the drive is giving me a little more access now, i mean earlier it used to hang right after opening the folder, now i can access some of the pictures but after few minutes, it again responds the same way.
one more thing i want to bring you concern. there was a folder containing pictures in other drive, i thought it is working properly and there is much space left in this drive, so i moved that folder to this drive (the one which is creating problems) few time back, now that folder is also not accessible..

-right click on the folder that you want to open and click on properties. you will see three tabs "General, Sharing and Customize"
    - click on "Customize" and if the folder type selected as "Photo Album" or "Pictures", change it to "Documents"
-open your folder again. Browse through every folder and search for problem.

-If the folder contains video is unable to open, then change your video to thumbnails and unable to change properly and cause your system to generate error, then you've found the source.

it will be helpful for you......

Are you only using Windows Explorer when these hangs/lags occur?

If you try Total Commander, Xyplorer or some other file manager, does this occur?

Just want to see if this is a Windows Explorer issue or all file management.
