Windows 7: Windows startup has become very slow

Windows startup has become very slow

When fired up, my PC seems to go through the start up process OK. I sign in, my desktop loads and then any icon, start menu item, key stroke takes between 2 and 4 minutes to function. The HD seems to be basically inactive, just the occasional flash. After this the PC seems to be OK. Event viewer simply shows assorted Service Control Manager errors about 30000 millisecond timeouts. By the time Task Manager/Performance manager works it's too late to see what's going on. This happens 2 out of 3 times and for the last 10 days. I doubt if it's malware as I run 2 products.

Any clues how I can find out what might be going on during this "dead" period?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Martin

Are you saying that you run 2 AV programs - and which ones are they ??

Kaspersky IS and Malwarebytes on demand. There is no conflict.

OK, that's good. You could try Soluto - not sure though whether it will give you a lot of data for the time after the system booted.

Another test I would do is to disable all startup programs (including Kaspersky) and see whether that helps. Many people reported problems with Kaspersky, but that may not be the cause in your case.

Then I would look whether there are any scheduled taks that are supposed to run after startup. Run schtasks in Command Prompt and have a look whether there is anything suspicious.

-Click Start
-Go to |Run|
-Type msconfig
-press ENTER
-then go to Start Up tab and Uncheck the boxes for the programs that you think you may not use often.
-Uninstall unnecessary programs that you are not using and Apply DE-fragmentation and delete temporary files from your computer

It will be helpful for you....

WHS/Britny,

Thanks for the responses. It didn't take long to see the problem is Kaspersky related. When I went to their user forum there was already a thread, started on the same day as my timeouts began.

I'd replace it then with Microsoft Security Essentials.
