Most of the time, the power supply is the culprit on freezes. In second place is a failing memory stick. But in those cases, Windows usually stays locked up.

If you have a real good friend with a desktop, open his up and temporarily borrow his psu and replace yours with his. If the freezes stop, you have your answer. Buy a new one. Spend at least $50. This is one piece of hardware you don't want to cut corners. Get more wattage, and at least an 80+ Bronze rating. Corsair, Antec, and Seasonic are favored here.

If not, download MemTest bootable iso on his machine, burn it to cd and boot up your pc with it. Run it for at least 3-4 hours. If it finds a problem, you'll see it the bottom half of the screen.

If this shows a problem, test one stick at a time in each slot.
