    Black screen with cursor at start up


    HI I HAVE A DELL INSPIRON 640M LAPTOP RUNNING WIN 7 ULTIMATE.
    ALL of a sudden when I turned it on it boots to the dell logo then goes black with cursor
    I put in the win 7 disc and tired to do a start up repair and restore to no luck
    it states no restore points on this computer and start up repair does nothing
    I have looked at several threads and can not find any solutions that works. this laptop was working find a week ago
    I had not used it since then

    any ideas what I can try before I do a clean install and lose all my files?

    I have tried to do a clean install but once it gets to windows must restart the computer restarts and I am at the black screen with the cursor.. so I am not sure what to do at this point.
