Why does my laptop access the hard disk all the time

It is impossible to work on my laptop. I have and ASUS i3 machine with 2 GB RAM. The HD LED is almost always on, and doing every little task can take a long time. Any ideas what I can do to improve response time?

You can start making your performance improve by following this: Optimize Windows 7
Also, by following the tutorial, you HDD will surely be less active than it was before.
You don't have to do all the steps, but I would certainly do these steps: 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 15, 19, 20, 26, 28, 31, 33 and 35.

But if you want maximum performance, you might consider doing Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 courtesy of Gregrocker

Look for Indexing options (Start button, write it in the search box), and try to turn that off.
