i7 Processor running at 1.2GHz during games?

I bought an Acer V3-771G last september and have just began to notice that my processor slows down significantly during games. I've noticed a loss of 90fps in minecraft and 20fps in borderlands 2 when this takes effect, which is after 10-15mins of ingame-time.

    My specs are as follows;
Intel i7-3610QM Quad Core @ 2.3GHz, turboboost up to 3.3GHz
Nvidia Geforce GT 650M, 2GB video card
    16GB DDR3 Memory
    1750GB HDD

It might be an overheating issue, it might not. But for the past few days ive been running diagnostics during gaming. HWiNFO64, tells me that my intel processor decreases to just 1.2GHz during the immense fps drop i have during games. Whilst at the time of the fps drop, speccy tells me that the highest temperature my laptop reaches is 75C. Which leads me into thinking its a software problem.

Also when the laptop's under high load, when i take my charger out the processor clock speed kicks up and i get more fps for a few seconds before it eventually drops back down to normal low again

If anyone can help i'd appreciate it greatly

Go in your BIOS and disable SpeedStep.

Try resetting your power plan to defaults by following this: Power Plan - Restore Default Settings Then set your power plan to "High Performance" and see if the CPU is now running at maximum performance.

I'm aware of disabling this, but won't this make my laptop overheat quickly?
    I don't have any cooling-mats

High performance mode helps, and Hwinfo shows that the processor stays on turboboost for much longer, but my laptop gets quite hot during intense gaming. How long should I leave my laptop on this setting while gaming, so I can avoid overheating issues?

If your CPU slowed down due to overheating then make sure your vents aren't blocked.

    Hi Hendies

After cleaning your fans/intakes a Laptop Cooler is a good idea but do remember Laptops were and are designed to be portable firstly not so much gaming, yes there are so called gaming Laptops (eg) Alienware, Rock etc and with the price of some a decent gaming rig can be built with the grunt and cooling that no Laptop can match but do try a Laptop cooler and good luck :)

Ah thanks for the advice. I'll try cleaning out my laptop fan tomorrow, haven't done that at all since I bought it. I have previously considered purchasing a cooling mat since I use my laptop mostly for gaming, even bought it as an in-mind replacement for my dying gaming desktop so I might aswell try and make the most of the specs on this laptop.

In response to the other feedback, i'd already been on this site before and used the performance plan reset article. I even thought it was a faulty nvidia driver install but clean installing them didn't affect my fps ingame

I can't seem to be able to access the fan in my laptop, so i tried minecraft again for 10 minutes without my charger in and my laptop CPU and Motherboard temperature suddenly rose to 75-80C. Does this mean my laptop has a overheating problem?

80 degrees is just right for gaming on laptops. I'd start worrying if the temps are in the mid 90s.

After using a vacuum cleaner through the heat vents (not the safest but i couldn't get at the insides due to Acer design) and reinstalling the intel chipset and nvidia drivers, and resetting the power options (again), and reinstalling the intel turboboost monitor application (i just tried everything basically); the problem seems to have gone away for the moment. Will post any details here if anything develops

EDIT: i think it was an intel driver error which was messing with the turboboost and speedstep functions
