Windows 7: Need Help Making Windows Repair Disc USB

Need Help Making Windows Repair Disc USB

I have a multiboot USB made with YUMI for some general repair and virus removal, but one thing it lacks is Windows Repair Discs for startup repair and repairing corrupt files with sfc (If Hiren's Boot CD can be used for this, let me know)

I do have a repair disc for Windows 7 x64 on a CD, but that loads much slower than a USB, and not having to worry about physical discs and only a single USB would be nice.

Today I decided to give it another shot. I used Format Factory to turn that repair disc into an ISO. I then added it to my YUMI multiboot as an unlisted ISO. It was able to boot, much faster than the CD, but unlike the physical CD, it was unable to detect my Windows installation. I'm guessing this has something to do with the disk looking for the installation on the USB, instead of my hard drive.

While startup repair was then pointless, as I remember in the past using Startup Repair would overwrite the USB boot sector with the Windows 7 boot sector, I was able to use the command prompt. I then input the sfc command:

sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\

It said it was beginning repairs and would take some time, but after a couple minutes, it had not started scanning at all, just saying it was starting.

So, can anyone help me?

I'd use the Windows 7 installer for your licensed version which is easier to write to stick and multi-boot. It's available in Step 1 of Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

You can run SFC from the Repair Command Line as well as other repairs shown in Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start

The problem is not with my installation. I just need the repair discs in case I need to fix someone else's computer.

Anyways, it turns out the sfc scan DOES work, as after I left it alone today for a few minutes, it did finish and found no problems (which was expected since my Windows runs fine), it just didn't show a progress %.

However, there's still the issue of my USB not recognizing the Windows installation on the hard drive, while the repair CD detects it fine. I believe this is because it is looking for a Windows installation on the USB the repair disc is on, instead of the hard drive. How would I edit my repair USB to have it look on the hard drive for the Windows installation instead of the USB?

Again, use the Windows 7 installer USB for these repairs. I've never seen the Repair CD successfully written to stick and there's no reason to do it since the installer writes easily and has all of the repair functions plus can have all versions unlocked to use for installation.

Well that would mean downloading 6 ISOs. My USB stick isn't nearly large enough.

No you only need to write any installer version to stick then delete the ei.cfg file in Sources folder and you'll have a menu at boot to choose version.

Okay, so it doesn't matter if I download the Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate ISO? Do I still need a separate 32 and 64-bit one?

Yeah but you can wait til you need 32 bit unless you use it a lot.

I use UltraISO to write to stick, keep 32 or 64 bit files in a folder until needed then spill them into root so they'll boot. But Yumi works differently with the other tools booting alongside. There are Yumi experts here who can help you.

A YUMI expert would be cool, as I believe I'd still have the problem of the USB boot not detecting the Windows installation on the HDD. Of course that only affects the Startup Repair option. Does running bootrec /FixMbr /FixBoot /RebuildBcd accomplish the same Startup Repair functions? Also, I'll probably try and get an 8GB USB, as it seems each Windows 7 ISO is around 2.2GB, and my USB is 4GB, plus some of it is used by other bootable things I have.

Is there any better place than the Digital River site to download the ISOs, because I'm getting an agonizingly slow 130KB/S, despite my average download speed for other sites of 1-2.5MB/S.

I still think your problem is trying to load the Repair ISO which I've never seen done before. Use the Install ISO. But you can ask here to get Yumi expertise: YUMI MultiBoot...more than one Windows 7 ISO possible?
