So the long hex numbers above are MD5 checksums.

We see that there are several types of sc.exe.mui file

    1) the one extracted from the official Microsoft DVD, with date 12/04/2011 checksum 581815B20E73E25E183AB6D9FA755173

I copied this file to c:\windows\system32\en-US

    2) the one in c:\windows\SysWOW64\en-US dated 14/07/2009, also with checksum 581815B20E73E25E183AB6D9FA755173

the original file in c:\windows\system32\en-US also had this date and this checksum
the 32-bit English version in c:\windows\winsxs also has this date and this checksum

    3) the Spanish language versions, same size, same date but two different checksums

    4) the 64-bit English version in c:\windows\winsxs also has the date 14/07/09, but slightly different time and different checksum

Did you rerun SFC after the fix ? It should then find no corrupted files .

    It's still acting weird.

With the help from VistaKing, I've managed to solve the problem for the join.avi file.
I had to boot to a rescue disk version of windows and then manually replace the join.avi files with files from an official install disk that I extracted with 7-zip.

I did this for sc.exe.mui too, but after several runnings of sfc /scannow and reboots, it's still giving me an error message:
    file [l:20{10}]"sc.exe.mui" of Microsoft-Windows-ServiceControllerCommandLineTool.Resources, Version = 6.1.7600.16385, pA = PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE_AMD64 (9), Culture = [l:10{5}]"en-US", VersionScope = 1 nonSxS, PublicKeyToken = {l:8 b:31bf3856ad364e35}, Type neutral, TypeName neutral, PublicKey neutral in the store, hash mismatch

This, despite the fact that all English-language versions of sc.exe.mui on the system currently have the same MD5 signature as the "official" file extracted from the Microsoft install disk:

The Spanish versions are different, but that's not what SFC is complaining about.

The version in c:\tmp is the version extracted from the install disk.
On the install disk, the 32-bit version and the 64-bit version of the English sc.exe.mui files are the same (although the Spanish ones are different).
