Thanks mate, yeah I know, that is why I asked, why you were telling OP to remove bitdefender....?

Were they running multiple anti-virus/firewalls at same time?
Don't do that, ANYONE, this includes the built in crummy Windows one, major performance hit.

Reason why I asked the OP to remove it for now is cause they said it stopped . Their virus scans come out clean so its not a virus . But when they ran Process Explorer it showed 3 C:\Windows\explorer.exe files .

with regards to hard drives waking up, l actually turned that setting off, so it shouldnt be related to that.

however when the mkv issue does happen it usually freezes the whole system for a few seconds before playing everything as normal. in fact if l really think about it l usually only get the high explorer usage after experiencing a freeze and mostly only seem to notice it around or when l visit sites like facebook or ones containing certain types of dynamic content.. so far its only a couple of sites where lve found it to be noticeable but its annoyingly hit or miss as l could go a few weeks without issue then it happen a few times.

my OS drive is an SSD drive which dont need defragging, would lower its lifespan if l did. my other hard drives however do get degragged once a week.. depends on how badly they need it tho.

Right that is what I was asking, the non-SSD fare, I run with 2 SSD's myself, just wanted to eliminate fragmentation as a possible reason for lags, you are well informed, which isn't so typical.

I do get a little disgusted seeing 40% fragmentation on my SSD though.

    Scanned for rootkits lately?

Line by line gone through your BIOS settings?

I finally got sick of Firefox issues myself and switched to Pale Moon, an optimized Firefox, didn't reinstall FF this wipe or any other browser.

    Backup SSD Image

If you decide to reinstall, you should create some backup SSD images.

Once you have reinstalled Windows and gotten the updates, but before you install any programs, you should create a backup SSD image.

    Note:
If you don't like Windows Backup, you may need to install something like Macrium Reflect first.

IMO, you should create another image after you have installed your programs, before you start surfing the Internet.

Restoring a backup image on your PC (re-imaging) takes a lot less time than reinstalling everything. :)

I prefer to use Macrium Reflect.

l found it even quicker using a flash drive but then again you do have to take into account program installing as well :/

    I'm confused.

It takes 7 minutes to restore my OS and programs from my backup HDD image.
It should be even quicker using an SSD.

It would take me all day (if not longer) to install Windows 7 (+ SP1 and the other updates), configure/customise it and install my software.
