windows 7 stand-by problems

Hello, a week ago when I went to sleep my brother still was on my laptop and I asked him to shut it down when he was done, instead he put it in standby and the following morning it didn't reboot from that well. ever since when I tell my computer to go into standby, my background "fades out" as normal, but the windows 7 screen that always says logging off and going into standby or shutting down etc. doesn;t display, instead the screen goes black and stays like that, it doesn't go into standby and the only to get it out of this condition is to hjold the power button until it shuts down. I am running windows 7 ultimate 64 bit. sny help?

Thijs

So your laptop use to shut down and sleep (standby) without any problems, right?
After your brother used it, those no longer work correctly?
You can't ask him what he did that might have caused this sudden change in behavior (and get a definite answer)?

Do you have a Restore Point or better yet a Backup Image from before the problem started?
That might be your easiest way, to see if a restore can fix this.

No telling what someone might have changed, including getting some malware on your PC.

Also, when a PC sleeps, it does not do a Logoff...
Waking from sleep should restore the Windows session exactly as it was before sleeping.
That would not be possible if it did a logoff (and closed all running programs).

Hello, thanks for the fast reply ! yes I know that a standby doesn't mean logging off but I was trying to describe the windows 7 screen, as far as the restore points, I am trying one out after this reply. Thanks in advance !

EDIT: that did it! many thanks !
