lm not made of money lol.

like l said tho it wants to run chkdsk but it seems to stop on one record using it in windows, is there a tool l could use to scan the drive and find out the issue? ld rather not have to find places to store a 1TB of data as l dont have that kinda space at all between either my laptop or my internal storage and l cant afford another drive, would be equally problematic connecting to my system as my wiring is a mess :/ at the moment.

The Seatools does just that, scans the drive looking for errors. I posted a tutorial showing all the options. Have a look through it. I understand disk check is failing at a certain point, that's why perhaps Seatools for DOS, running outside of windows will discover a problem, it then offers to try and fix it.

cant seem to get it to pick up with the dos tools in dos, that being said its not picking it up as connected in bios either which is annoying. however l did a short generic test in windows with the non-dos ver which picked up no problems.

Good idea Z and timeless there is another form of disk tester in Partition Wizrad that actually tests the surface of the spinner Best Free Partition Manager Freeware and free partition magic for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Vista and Windows XP 32 bit & 64 bit. MiniTool Free Partition Manager Software Home Edition.

PS I should have said click on the pic of the drive at the end NOT the partition area

You need to test the drive and not just the file system. Use Seatools which is quite good. See if it will repair it enough to complete Disk Check or Partition Wizard Check File System.

You should always have your files backed up anyway. If you can't afford another HD or have space to put them for the operation, you can upload 7gb to Skydrive free with each Windows Live ID. More here: Sync, Backup and Store your Files to the Cloud with Skydrive - Windows 7 Forums

Yep Greg that's why I suggested the surface test in the previous post I've found it really good in the past at picking out the older drives or ones that have may been dropped and physical surface damaged - if that is indeed what it says it does

Which test? Please be specific. Have you run Seagate Seatools booted CD Long test?

If so and it passed run the Disk Check from booted installer or System Repair disk's Command line as shown in Option 2 of tutorial.

Access Command Line by pressing Shift + F10 at first screen after booting.

problem is l cant seem to access the drive outside of windows on either system so any tool l run has to be within windows.
