My Cdrive: The "NO VACANCY" sign is up but nobody's home?

My Cdrive is Red-lining @ near full capacity. 5.83Gb left out of 97.5Gb.

I seem to have picked up some 30-40GB of Dark Matter. Can you gentlemen help or should I be passing this issue down the line to the Higgs Bosun Particle Collider??

Hello AaLF,

If you like, you could go through the items in the tutorial below to help ID what is eating up your HDD space, and possibly free some of it up.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

I think we have a problem Houston.....

Hey Brink. Long long ago I had this problem. The solution was given by WHS:

Remember that Run command issue I had that disappeared & we "fixed" it. Well, it doesn't seem to like WHS's command above. When I hit ENTER instead of taking action it just closes.

I'm think the issue is shadowstorage. so where from here?

No worries. See the tutorial below for this to see if it may help more. That command need to be run in an elevated command prompt instead of the Run dialog.

Oh-oh. So much for my layman's opinion. The Cdrive was already set @ 5 Gb. max. So we are still 'redlining'. It's never been over 2/3 full.

Either disk cleanup or ccleaner just recovered 10 Gb. I can live with that 4 a while. Thanks again Brink.

You're welcome.

If you are saving a lot (ex: pictures, music, etc...) on your C drive, then you might consider this below to be able to access the files from your libraries with the files actually located where you like instead.
  • Create a new folder at any location you want (ex: D).
  • Move any files you want into the new folder.
  • Include the new folder into a library of your choice.
  • If you like, you can also set the new folder to be the default "save" to location for the library as well.
  • Repeat if you would like to have a new folder for each library if you like.

the dark matter is often Hibernate.sys, pagefile.sys and ProgramData.
These are hidden system files and take up huge amounts of storage, I just turned Hibernate off on my system and recovered 15 GB.

there are other hidden files as well as these, but those 3 are the big users of HDD space.

Hibernate didn't reduce anything even after reboot. But who cares!!!

Look at these pics of my C drive in attachments. Oh happy day.

How do I stop W7 "calling home" and displaying "not genuine" messages?
MS thinks that one of my PCs is running W7 that's not genuine. It is genuine - at least I bought it from Amazon and paid 141 for it so that - to me - means it's genuine. It may not be but neither Amazon nor MS will take any responsibility for it not being genuine so I've given up with them both. I...
