Mouse pad arrow intermittently has an attached +/- rectangle

When moving the mouse pad arrow over the screen, a small rectangle with a + at its top and a - at its bottom appears at the tip of the arrow. The cause of this phenomenom is unknown and it happens out of the blue. When it does occur, a movement of the mouse up or down causes the screen to move suddenly up or down. This occurs without pushing the left or right mouse pad buttons. The rectangle can be made to disappear by moving the arrow sideways. It may or may not return when the arrow is then moved up or down.

I have not seen any discussion of this strange behavior on any forums. Any ideas on how to eliminate this behavior? Where can I get a mouse pad driver that behaves normally?

Welcome to Seven Forums billCalif. I too am a Bill from California I am not a laptop user, is it possible to get a screenshot of the problem? It's likely a feature of the touchpad, but a picture=1000 words :)

Well, for the first time, I was unable to get the problem to show up. I tried working in different
apps, restarted the computer but no luck. Since it must be able to read my mind, I am sure it will return
when not wanted. I will post a screenshot when it reappears. The pad is a Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad; I will see if there is a driver for that.

BillCalif this is not a good sign. You could also be infected. From your specs.
    Antivirus none

    Please explain.

I discovered what's going on. The touchpad has a vertical section marked on the right. When there I get the rectangle. Before, I was wandering into that area without knowing it. Thanks, and sorry for not doing my exploring sooner. And yes I will get that antivirus program.
