WUDFHost.exe constant 10% CPU usage normal?

    Hi guys

Just joined the forums, although I've lurked here for a while and I knew if someone knew the answer to this, it'd be you guys.

I searched on google and on this forums and didn't find a relevant answer so here it goes:

I've been running 7 x64 pro for a couple of weeks now, and WUDFHost.exe keeps a constant 10% cpu usage. I don't think it was like that when my install was fresh, but I'm not actually certain. 10% counts to me since my cpu is not all that powerful and is limiting my fps in certain games when it gets to 100% usage.

So is it normal for this process to act this way? Is there a safe way to turn it off when not needed? (or am I constantly needing it and am too dense to notice?. I tried stopping it with the task manager but it insta-starts up again.

    Thanks in advance!

One of your hardware devices it using a User mode drive, WUDFHost.exe is required for that driver to communicate with the hardware.

    Thanks for your reply.

Is there a way to check which device(s) require(s) this?

Try unplugging external devices, would be one way. Or get Process Explorer and review what DLLs it loads might be something that gives it away.

    Thanks!

I had to dig around with process explorer and found out a file called tcwbf.dll is the one making it use 10% of the cpu all the time. Made a search for it on my pc and apparently that dll is related to the fingerprint reader on my laptop (UPEK fingerprint reader).

I'm going to ask around people with the same laptop model if they are having the same issue (sager np 8662).

    Thanks!

    Hello everyone!

Well, this is my first post, but I'm sure there's so much to come!!

I'm using Win7 RC Ultimate 64bit since the first day of its release, the first couple of months went alright, but day after day, I'm noticing that WUDFHost.exe is using more of more of both RAM & CPU

and just minutes ago I had to kill it as it was using over 550MB of RAM and 50% of CPU processing power!! and then I made my search and got here!! If I knew about Process Explorer before I ended the process then I would've checked related files, but now I have to wait for it to happen again... and I bet that won't take too long :\

Anyway, I don't want to completely disable the service, as from what I've read, it's essential for the running of Windows Live Messenger, and I have a Validity Fingerprint Reader built into my laptop which I'm actually using...

So, the question is, is there some kind of solution, a patch or a way of prevention to the overload of both CPU & memory? Has it been fixed in the final release of Win7? or shall I add this to my list of reasons to revert back to Mandriva Linux?

I solved my problem by uninstalling the UPEK Protector Suite 2009. Windows is still able to use the fingerprint reader for log on purposes (although for some reason, when waking the laptop up after sleep, the fingerprint reader doesn't work, but for initial boot up it does fine).

Can't help you out anymore than that, sorry
