    sleep utility

I cannot get my computer to go into sleep mode. I change all the settings I know but it just stays on. this just happened in the last week. I've always been able to change and set it. I can change pictures, colors, etc but the sleep function doesn't work.

    Hello Dick,

You might see if running the lastwake command right after it wakes up like that to see if it may be able help ID what may be waking the computer.

    Hope this helps,

Here is a tutorial for sleep problems you can work through:
Power Options and Sleep Mode Problems

You could also run this command from an elevated command prompt to see if there are any requests preventing sleep:
    powercfg -requests

Thank you for the responses. My computer would not sleep automatically. I tried your suggestions to no avail. The last suggestion to restore the computer did the trick. All was well, then this morning microsoft automatically updated my computer and guess what? The problem was back! I could manually sleep the computer but that's all. I have just finished restoring my computer again and it now works. So I am not automatically updating right now. Is this something that I should report to Microsoft?

Create a new restore point. Then install the updates, one by one.

    Reboot if prompted.

This way you can determine which one is causing the problem.

    sleep utility

Regarding my post of sleep utility not working, I finally decided to download a few optional updates and that seemed to do the trick, but I wonder, why were they optional?

    Hello Dick,

Glad to hear you got this solved and Thank You for posting back with how you solved it.
I don't remember ever reading someone solved an issue like this by installing Optional updates!
Your feedback may well help others trying to solve this problem :)

MS "categorizes" updates and only installs security and important automatically.
It's up to each user to review and install optional (and "other") updates.
I suggest opening Windows Update at least monthly after Patch Tuesday updates are installed to see if any optional updates are available.

I see this where optional updates are not installed on PCs I help with.
These are pre-built PCS using the default out-of-the-box settings, so I believe that is the "common" configuration for pre-builts.
I believe this configuration is good for most people, as they would never check for any updates, so having the most important ones install automatically keeps them best protected and up to date.

Personally I like to check for all updates and review them before they update my system automatically, without me knowing what is installing, when, etc.
I have all updates installed except optional Bing updates that I do not want...

You should at least take a look at your WU settings and decide what's best for you.
Here's a screen print of my settings:

You're "geek" enough to be here asking questions and doing great asking for help and replying.
    That is much appreciated.
How geek do you want to be?
