Windows Desktop Takes 20+ minutes to load from entering Password

Hi All,

I've looked on a few forums and at several threads to see if I can find a solution apart from reloading Windows.

Basically, for the past few months the laptop boots fine up until it comes to loading up the desktop. I enter my password in fine and then it takes about 20 minutes for it to become responsive.

For me, it's not a major issue, I just came on here looking if there is any advice out there.

I would start by running full AV and malware scans (but not at the same time)
Microsoft Security Essentials - Microsoft Windows
Malwarebytes : Malwarebytes Anti-Malware removes malware including viruses, spyware, worms and trojans, plus it protects your computer

If no progress try establishing a clean boot to see if any programs are bogging down
Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup

Give it a go and let us know how you get on

I have already scanned for viruses/malware and it came up clean

I started following the second step and it rebooted absolutely fine

If it fixed your problem then you can start adding bits back one by one to see what was the original cause but to be honest the only startup entry you need is AV the rest is optional

But glad to hear you got it sorted

Computer takes about 1.5 minutes to load the desktop + icons
Granted my computer's now 4-5 years old. I was wondering if anyone has an idea on this. I ran chkdsk, Malwarebytes, and Ccleaner. All were clear but the last, which fixed many things, but I still have the issue. I have minimal programs that run on start-up, so I highly doubt it's that. I...

My laptop takes 20 minutes to load, even in safe mode
My laptop takes over 20 minutes to load, even in safe mode. What can be done about that? The general performance of the computer is slow, and it wasn't like that when I brought it. I've tried defragmenting it, but it didn't do anything.

"Downloads" folder takes minutes to load in Windows Explorer
I am having trouble just viewing the "Downloads" folder in Windows Explorer It used to just be a periodic thing, now it takes literally 2-5 minutes to load this folder! (I cannot even sort it while it is loading!) I noticed in Resource Monitor that "MsMpEng.exe" (Microsoft Security Essentials)...

Right clicking takes several minutes to load.
Whenever I right click on a file, it usually takes around 3 - 4 minutes for the options menu to appear, when of course it should appear instantly. This has been on-going for a long time, does anybody have any suggestions? Thank you.

Entering password takes me back to Ctrl Alt Delete screen
Hi I've seen people with similar problems to mine but not quite the same, so apologies if I missed one and this is a repeat. I have a desktop machine that is connected to my work domain. Most days it works fine, but after the machine has been sitting idle for a couple days and I can't...

desktop takes minutes to load after login
I have a relatively new win7 enterprise 64-bit install. This is a domain account, so I have to do ctrl+alt+del to login. After entering my password, the welcome notice comes up (with the spinning circle), and it takes quite a while for the desktop to appear. It can be as long as a couple of...
