Screen freezing and weird mouse cursor when idling or on low load

Hi,

I've been experiencing screen freeezing, "GPU stopped responsing and recovered" messages, several seconds mouse lag, weird mouse cursors and occasionally weird loud noises from the headphones or no noice whatsoever. Apart from the headphone issue all other symptoms only happen when idling or on low load (never while gaming) like using internet or simple excel charts so the headphone thing is probably a separate problem. Sometimes after going to sleep the screen is just plain black and I can't seem to wake up the PC

This usually makes me to reboot and then everything works normally for awhile. I'm using a fairly old HDD and GPU. The systeminfo.exe from this site set nVidia HD audio as my sound card but I'm actually using X-Fi XtremeMusic (SB0460).Do these problems sound like something you have come across before?
