Windows 7: Windows goes into Incredibly Slow mode

Windows goes into Incredibly Slow mode

My Windows 7 PC quite often slows down to a geriatric snail's pace. In this state the mouse pointer lags several seconds behind what my mouse is telling it to do (which makes positioning the mouse quite difficult), it takes ages to respond to CTRL/ALT/DEL, or to draw the Task Manager window on the screen, and it's really not possible to do any real work.

I imagine that what has happened is that I have opened too many applications or documents, and that memory has run out, requiring zillions of page swaps in order to actually run any software. My question is, how can an operating system which is supposed to be of professional quality, and which millions of people and businesses all over the world depend on, be that crap at managing memory? Is it not a feature of an operating system to prevent the user from getting into this sort of mess, and providing a way out?

A secondary question is, how can I avoid getting into this situation (without needlessly restricting myself to only one application open at a time or similar), and how once in it can I easily get out of it?

Thanks - Rowan

The first thing we need is your system specs. We need to know what we are working with.

Speccy - Publish Snapshot of your System Specs

Give us a idea what programs you are trying to run at the same time that causes the problems.

What security software do you use?

Please run a full scan with it as well as with malware bytes which you can find in my signature.

You might want to take a look into ccleaner:

CCleaner - Delete Junk Files

Also see here on optimizing windows 7:

Optimize Windows 7

Maybe possibly to many startup programs?

Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup

To sum up, it most likely is not windows fault, I think its possibly more malware related or to many startup programs.

Are you indexing the entire system? Like all of C:\ drive?

Are you sharing media files over the network using WMP? That can look at every file on the system to see if it's media.

Look in Task Manager for mobsync.exe. If it is running, WMP is indexing all your media files. That ties up the HD. Unless the drive is SSD, that slows everything else down.

In addition to the steps Andrew suggested.

Download

Junkware Removal Tool to your Desktop.
  • Close your security software to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or 7, right-mouse click it and select Run as administrator.
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Be patient as this can take a while to complete, depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your Desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your reply.
Hope this helps,
John
