Non-OS 7200rpm WD Caviar Black 1TB drive slow to respond - spool time?

Hello,

My system specs should be in my signature. If not I will quickly edit this post to include them.

My OS (windows 7 home premium sp1) is on the SSD, as well as all programs. Data (such as pictures, movies, excel files, etc...) is contained on the WD Caviar Black 1TB drive. After some time, have not been able to determine a specific amount, when trying to access a folder or file on the WD drive the system will be slow to respond and I can hear the drive spooling up. This does not only happen after the computer has been allowed to enter sleep mode.

I am wondering if this is normal, as it is quite annoying. Is there any way to make the drive stay "active" while the computer is awake?

Thanks for the help!

Sounds like you need you need to check the power management in windows and or the bios as well to see what options are on what ones are off

Thank you for the tip. I have changed this setting and will report back to see if this has solved the problem. If it indeed has I will mark this as solved and distribute rep accordingly!

After originally thinking this had solved the problem, i came back and the problem persisted... It seems to be activated by the screen saver? I can't tell.

Ugh.....

Set the turn off disk option to "never" and if possible check s.m.a.r.t. status with crystal diskinfo. One other thing to try is another sata cable.

It seems that the maximum setting for that option is 999 minutes, which is effectively never. I'll look into crystal diskinfo now.

this? WD Support / Downloads / SATA & SAS / WD Black

it seems to be working better now with the setting at 999 mins

is there any risk of data corruption or shortening the life of my disk with the setting so long?

Back to your original question,

It is totally normal for a non OS hard drive to power off, or go to sleep and stop spinning when you`re not using it. That`s why it takes some time ( just a few seconds ) for it to wake up and let you use it.

Everyone one of my drives does it and it`s perfectly normal.

So, I picked up two 2TB drives today. One works, the other one half works. The external works just fine. The internal, which is a Caviar Black, is recognized by BIOS just fine, and I can see it in the Device Manger, but not Explorer. In the attachment it shows: My primary SSD:...
