    Odd Sleep Problem

Well, of course this problem is odd: After all, it happens to me....

I've had sleep problems in the past, which have usually been due to an unsolved failure of Home Group to find an existing printer. Based on that, starting last Saturday, I pursued that when my computer would not go to sleep .

The scenario: Computer went to sleep, as set in Power Options for two hours, Friday night, and, as set in SuperAntiSpyware, awakened at 0545 local, ran the daily scan, and computer went back to sleep. I woke it manually later, did my usual morning computing; over three hours later, machine was awake. I ran the Home Group troubleshooter, which did not report any printer problems, just the usual need to refresh Home Group, which had been done.

Having reset Sleep to three minutes, to test it, I found the computer still would not sleep, so restarted it. As it still would not go to sleep, I restarted it a second time, which fixed the problem. Sunday, same problem arose again, except that I only needed to restart once; this was also the case Monday.

Today, again, computer asleep previous night, woke for SuperAntiSpyware, went back to sleep. After my morning computing, machine was awake after more thana three hours since I had last used it. Instead of running the Home Group troubleshooter, I reset sleep to three minutes, restarted, computer went to sleep. I then ran the troubleshooter, which updated Home Group. Apparently, Home Group has not been the problem with sleep the last four days, as the previous printer problem never arose when running the troubleshooter.

Thus, I have no clue as to what is causing the latest sleep malady. Magic potions, incantations, sleep-inducing poetry, even computer-related suggestions are all welcome.

I know this may sound kinda obvious; but have you checked the power management settings in both the bios and within windows? Because if those settings are out of whack then yes you could definitely have "sleep" issues. Also; you might want to check for any possible driver updates for the motherboard etc which could affect how the "sleep" function is working.

To the two people who were kind enough to post in this thread:

    1. Bios is correct.

2.I know about the forum tutorials, and Last wake; neither are relevant.

Latest development: When I rebooted yesterday morning, I noted that the four apps (Firefox, Thunderbird, Word Perfect, PaperPort) that I always load after a restart all started very quickly for the first time in a week or so.

Hoping that that indicated that whatever was causing sleep to stop working every day, I did not bother to reset Power Options to check. Around 2100 local last night, I noticed that the computer was still awake, long after I had stopped using it. Somewhat disgusted, I just left it running, rather than putting it to sleep manually.

To my surprise, when I entered the computer room around 0520 local, the computer was asleep; it had been awakened by SuperAntispyware at 0445 to run the daily scan, and gone back to sleep. This was the first day in a week or so that a reboot in the morning had a sustained ability to go to sleep the next day. Why the machine was awake last night, i have as much of an idea as I have as to what has been killing the sleep function during the day for seven days.

Will sleep continue to work as it has in the past? I will be happy if it does; if not, I don't know how to find the culprit, because whatever it is seems to work silently at some time during the day. That, for example, is why Last Wake does not tell me anything: The computer has not been asleep when the sleep function stops working, at least not from what I have seen in Last Wake so far: Power Options are set to go to sleep after two hours, and there have been days when I've never left the computer that long, yet the sleep function has stopped working.

I shall have to do an Internet search for the conspiracy-theory forum devoted to ways to confuse me. Hmm, I don't need to do that: I'm quite capable of accomplishing that myself....

Today's update: I don't recall if I put the computer to sleep using the keyboard last night or just let it run. This morning, just as SuperAntiSpyware finished its daily scan, the computer went to sleep.

I started doing some testing around 0700 local. The first thing I did was to run sfc /scannow, which found and fixed some errors. I did not think to take a screen shot of the result information, so don't know what that said had been fixed. It did say that there was a log file, which I could not find until a while later; I looked at it, but as it is meaningless to me, quickly closed it.

I then ran full scans with SuperAntiSpyware, Avasst! and MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, none of which returned any positive finds of things that needed to be removed.

I tested sleep a while ago, likely right after 1000 local, at which time it worked. At approximately 1345 local, I tested sleep again, which did not work. All I had done between the two tests was to read some RSS feeds and some threads on mozillaZine.

Very mysterious, as well as annoying, especially as I have no idea what else I find to to try to find and fix whatever the gremlin is.

Later: I have isolated failure to sleep in the past when, for reasons unknown and so far unknowable, Home Group says that there is a new printer on the network. I had been using the Home Group troubleshooter recently when the sleep problem arose, and until a few minutes ago, no problems were reported. This time, on my computer, I got the new-printer message.

Also for reasons I don't know, when I click on that, the Control Panel Home Group entry takes a long time to close. I clicked on, and then went to my wife's computer, and ran the Home Group troubleshooter; unusually, I did not get the missing printer message there. I returned to my computer, ran the troubleshooter again, and the printer message did not appear. I then changed sleep to one minute, and my computer went to sleep; this was unusual, as I normally have to restart one or both computers after getting Home Group to find itself.

At any rate, the missing printer problem may be why the sleep problem arose during the day to day; I ought to have checked Home Group before starting this message. `Megasigh'
