HP 4545S laptop Windows 7 Pro running slowly

I have an HP Probook 4545S laptop running Windows 7 Pro.
Programs run slowly. It has 4 gb of memory.

It was running well until about 2 weeks ago. I have not added any new software, only Microsoft patches.
It is running VirtualBox but I have not changed any memory allocations in Virtualbox.

I have a limited budget. Before I buy more memory I want to determine if additional memory will speed up the computer or is there some other problem.

In the event viewer, the only errors which seem to be performance related is Ntfs. It says
“the file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run chkdsk utility on the volume
    \Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy1”

The laptop only has one drive. I ran chkdsk c:/f on the drive, no errors reported.

Q1.) How do I run chkdsk on a shadow copy?

Q2.) What steps would you perform to determine what is slowing down the laptop?

    1. open a elevated command prompt(click start, programs, accessories, system tools, then right click on command prompt and select run as administrator)

    2. type sfc /scannow

    3. Also try scanning for Adware, Malware, and Spyware by downloading, installing and running the following 3 programs:

Malwarebytes : Thank you for download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

    Downloading AdwCleaner

Also, after download, installing, and running the 3 programs above; run the built in windows defrag program: click start, programs, accessories, system tools, then disk defragmenter and let it do a full scan and defrag overnight or whenever you wont be using the laptop for awhile. Hope this helps ya

Thank you for your answer. What steps would you take to determine if the pc is swapping data due to low memory?
