Rebuild Volumes on External drives? Necessary??

I have a friend in our photography group that is an Apple user.
This morning he posted:
"So I do this every Monday morning to protect my drives.
Scary thing is I do this every Monday and it has never taken longer than 30 minutes.
If you aren't maintaining your drives you are running a major risk.
I know I sound like broken record, but you guys are the photographers, I am the the tech geek."

I have never done this Rebuild Volumes.. Is this a good idea for Windows 7, Has anyone heard of this??

Thanks,
Butch

Never even heard the phrase "rebuild volumes". May be Apple-specific?

Obviously, if you are a photographer, you need to back up your pictures to a discrete drive and use ordinary maintenance habits and care, but I never heard the phrase.

"Volume" in PC-land typically means partitions. Partitions and/or hard drives can occasionally be lost for whatever reason, but the way to deal with that is to have backups. I have no idea what the term might mean to a Mac user.

I'd like to hear him explain how it "protects" his drives. And why it isn't a well-known practice if it is so beneficial and effective.

Did he state or imply that he is recommending it ONLY for Apple users?

Or did he state or imply that PC users should do it?

I'm hoping you are not inclined to take PC advice from someone who has not used a PC in 10 years.

I'd like to hear him or anyone expound on why it is a good idea even for Mac users. Out of curiosity, I wonder why Macs might have that issue when PCs don't.
