PC hangs on shutdown and fails to sleep

My PC hangs on shut down (that is, when I shut down my PC it is stuck on the "shut down" screen). I have not tested this to see how long it goes, but I know for a fact it is abnormal as this procedure never took longer than 20 seconds max before. And in addition, my PC fails when I put it to sleep. The screen goes black like normal but the PC is still on (can hear the fans and all that), but moving the mouse and tapping the keyboard and everything do not wake the PC so I am forced to restart it. I have already confirmed myself that the mouse and keyboard are set to wake the PC. I feel there is something wrong, but I have yet to find it. I have system mechanic, CCleaner, and Malwarebytes and have run all 3 already, but no difference so far.

When I read that you had System Mechanic, I came close to not posting to your thread. I don't like companies that make/sell those types of tools and I find it hard to not launch into a rant on the topic... but I'll try and control myself :-)

In my opinion, System Mechanic is not a good product and may do more harm than good.

You do not need any tools that claim to boost performance.

Anyway, please try the steps in this tutorial...
Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup
...to see if you can find the app that is causing the hang.

Thank you for replying anyways! I'll be checking if the tutorial helps me out. Anyways, are there any programmes that you would recommend instead of SM?

There is no app to recommend because W7 does not need 3rd party help to run well.

Removing temp files via CCleaner is fine, but you probably won't see any performance gain. (...other than in apps that scan every file. Fewer files should = quicker scan times.) You can also use CCLeaner to manage start up items. (See Tools > Startup.) That will help performance, but such startup management can be done without a 3rd party app. Also, it is better to look at the list of 3rd party things that are starting when Windows starts and see if there is a setting within the programs that prevents the app from starting with Windows. When you use settings like that, they are sometimes honored when the app is updated - so you don't have to keep disabling the startup via CCleaner or the like.

Malwarebytes is fine because it is a security app meant to compliment your antivirus app. I suppose that it could be argued that there is a performance gain from not being infected :-) but that is not the type of performance gain being touted by these snake oil apps like SM.

One of the ways that I (and others) test these so called performance boosting apps is to install them into a clean/fresh installation of W7. These bad apps generally claim to find lots of things wrong (especially in the registry). Letting the app "fix" the issues does nothing to boost performance as measured by several benchmark apps that were run before and after installing/using the app being tested. Sometimes the 3rd party "performance boosting" apps go too far and remove stuff from the registry that should have remained.

I did what the tutorial said but I still run into the same problem. It wasn't fixed after attempting a clean startup. So now I am back at square one. Anyways, I like to do things easily so I will keep CCLeaner and check out the startup tool, and I will keep Malwarebytes. But if what you say about SM holds true then I may just get rid of it. It is honestly just a programme my dad recommended I put on my PC because he had it as well (on an XP computer I believe) and he said it helped him. But if it is worthless for Win 7 then it just takes up space, haha.

You could read thru this thread:
Gathering a Startup, Shutdown, Sleep, Hibernate, or Reboot Trace
I'm not sure that we have anyone actively analyzing those log files... but maybe some of the info in the posts after the tutorial will help you.

None of the posts seemed to help me, nor did the tutorial as when I tried installing the SDK stuff it stopped and said it failed. So idk what is up with my PC. It won't shut down, restart, go to sleep, and hits points where it runs really slow. This is abnormal and shouldn't be happening.

Only time it shuts down or restarts though are when I force it to by pressing the buttons on my PC tower that do so. Aside from that, shutting down or restarting the PC just leads to staring at the Shut Down screen for a long time (I am not even sure if it ever shuts down successfully).

It might be best to back up your data and then try:
Repair Install
or
Clean Install Windows 7
