Random CPU spikes and Performance lagg
Hi everyone. The following is a quick overview of my problem, along with some screenshots of data, and my laptop specifications. All data below has been gathered when SWTOR was running so that I had an example to show.
When playing games (SWTOR, WoW, GW2 etc) my fps randomly drops from ~120fps on very high / ultra settings to between 3-20fps. To try and log some data about the spikes, I used the Window's Task Manager Performance tab to visually see the performance of my CPU and also the Resource Monitor to see what levels different process are working at.
Symptoms:
-Computer slows but doesn't freeze
-the really bad spikes are up to 100% cpu usage; usually though they are 30-50%.
-Video sound gets distorted and choppy. Only way I can describe it is the sound a record player makes when a vinyl has reached the end of the groves and it continues to rotate.
I put this down to a driver error so I tried a fresh install (today actually) and it seems that it's still doing exactly the same thing.
Some fixes I've tried...
- MalwareBytes Anti Malware - none
- Re-installed windows 7 from scratch
- Updated drivers
My computer specs
Intel Core i7 2720QM 2.2GHz (3.3GHz Turbo Mode, 6MB Cache)
Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium (64bit)
Graphics: 2 GB GDDR5 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580M
Memory: Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHZ (2 DIMMs)
I have owned the laptop just over a year now.
Attatched is my msconfig file (with Microsoft applications hidden), a task manager and resource monitor screenshot when the spikes happen and also my DxDiag information just incase anything in that is helpful...
Thank you for taking your time to read through this and hopefully someone can help me fix this problem...
If any more information is needed, I'll happily supply it!
Lewis.
