files in the C: drive - removable?

In the root of the C: drive there are numerous files with names like
    {0B6AF6FF-46CD-4E3F-BA2B-928D071D3561}
Nearly all are 3KB, so they don't take up much space, but they clutter up the directory.
They appear to be binary data of some sort.
Any idea where they come from? Windows update?
    Can they safely be removed?

These are from Windows Updates, if the folders are still there are updating and you have rebooted then they are safe to be removed as far as i am concerned, i have never had an issue deleting these folders after updates.

Thanks, I've temporarily moved them to a folder on another disk and will confirm that nothing untoward happens.

Use this tutorial to cleanup left overs from Windows 7 updates.
I don't know if it will work once you have moved them.
After using Disk Cleanup Extended reboot.

Yes you can safely delete these. These folders are used during the extracting process (when the update begins to install), and kept in case the update fails to install.

The only folders that should be on the main c directory are:

    -Perflogs
    -program files
    -users
    -Windows

Some strange applications will add things there in rare instances, but this in my opinion is what should be there on a clean install of 7 and all rounds of updates are applied.

This is useful information and thanks, but on checking mine there's no Perflogs. What does it contain and what does it do?

Some people have it there, some do not. I think It relates to the windows 7 performance resource monitor. If you use it, it keeps logs in there.
