Windows 7: Not recognized as Administrator

Not recognized as Administrator

Hi Guys,

I am trying to restore my desk top clock from the gadgets but when I click on desk top gadgets in control panel I get a message saying "Desktop gadgets are controlled by your Administrator". Now I am the only user and apart from the built in Administrator account I am the only other Administrator.

When I look in Local users and groups in Computer Management, click to see properties on my name it says that I am a member of Administrators group.

Does anyone have any idea why my PC doesn't recognize that I am an Administrator?

Thanks

llewitha

Microsoft recommends disabling Windows Sidebar and Gadgets for security reasons. If you have done this you'll see this message.

You'll find more info here: Microsoft Security Advisory: Vulnerabilities in Gadgets could allow remote code execution

Thanks for replying,

I don't remember ever having done this but that's not to say I haven't. This has only happened though in the last few weeks. Was it perhaps included in a recent security update?

Is there a way that I can check to see if this is the case?

I don't think so but can't say for sure. On that page you can download and run a Fix it either to disable or enable. If you want to test the enable one to see if it solves your problem, you can always run the disable one later (if you want the best security)

That seems to have been it.

I ran the disable Fix it and access to the Gadgets has been restored.

Thanks again for your help.

Ok, great. But the disable fix it should disable it and enable would enable it Keep that in mind if you run into issues again.

Microsoft would not release an update to disable this feature. Only the kb or turning off windows features-gadgets would cause this.

Perhaps a security program on your pc has done this, or someone else applied it to your pc. But a patch from microsoft update was not issued for this as the risk is quite low. If you stay with microsoft certified gadgets, you should be fine.
