High Physical Memory Issues

Recently, I saw that my computer used a lot of physical memory. Now, what could I possibly do to prevent my computer from using so much memory?

When dealing with suspected memory problems the best place to start is a screenshot of Task Manager - Performance tab. This shows important information not found anywhere else.

The physical memory stays as high as 30% even after restarting the computer.

I don't see anything unusual or a cause for concern. Considering what is running 47% memory usage on a 32 bit OS with 4 GB RAM is quite normal.

I understand that this seems high. But appearances can be deceiving. In any modern OS memory is designed to be used, not sit idle. The memory manager will always try to find some use for as much memory as possible, even if it is only of trivial value. The ideal would be zero free memory at all times. But we are not there yet.

It is important to understand that this usage is highly dynamic. Usage of individual processes will vary according to how much memory you have, what the process is doing, what other processes are doing, and much more. Usage appears to be high but that is only because there is currently no better use for it. If you were to load a large application use for current processes will be trimmed back, drastically if necessary.

There are many programs on the Internet that promise to reduce memory usage, some free, some commercial. Please do not use one of these. I have many words to describe them, none of them good, some I can't repeat on this forum. They are worse than useless.

Memory management in Windows 7 is very good. The biggest issue is that it is not well understood and people often see problems where none exist.
