Performed System Cleanup-Rebooted system Continuous loop "Cleaning Up"

    Hello all,

Helping a friend on their Laptop PC, Sony Vaio, Model: PCG 61813L (2 yrs old). OS = Win7 Home Premium. Having the following problems:

Maintenance has never been performed: I performed a system cleanup, removing old files. Completed a defrag using the installed Windows Defrag Program completing two passes.

Turned off and rebooted receiving following message "performing clean up" still running for over 45~60 minutes...seems to be in a continuous loop.

After rebooting the first time the PC told me "a serious error has occurred with your hard drive: back up all of your data and replace the HDD". The PC is only 2 yrs old, Virus Protection is installed (Norton).

I was thinking to maybe try a clean install of Windows 7. I have already backed up important data to a thumb drive.

Any ideas out there on why the continuous loop seems to be occurring? Thanks for your help.

It sounds like a hard drive problem. Your hard drive may be failing. Backing up is the best thing to do. After backed up, go to the web site of your hard drive manufacturer and test the drive.
