Okay so I've done as instructed by going into selective start-up and loading only "Load System Services" then i went to the Services TAB, Checked off the hide Microsoft services, and then disabled everything. After doing that I restarted my pc and still the second explorer.exe comes up and uses allot of the memory.

Repair Install?

Thanks for doing that. It seems that we can rule out malware or third party software as the cause. Now I'm not sure what do do next. All I can say is that from my own experience of having to reinstall windows multiple times - usually due to over-zealous tweaking, that it's always a good idea to have several system image backups handy including one made after reinstalling windows and applying all updates and patches.

The next step is probably going to be a repair install but I'm really sorry to say that's not something that I'm confident in helping you with.

Not entirely sure what a Repair install is. From what I googled it is you reset windows only and your drivers im guessing but you keep your data? Not to sure to be honest

Repair Install Tutorial

Theres a tutorial if you want to read through it:

Repair Install

I can't help you with that though.

You could try a last ditch repair effort using UVK if you like. There's a few fixes that it might be worth trying that I've used on my own machine without any issues but I don't actually know if they'd fix your issue or mess things up more!

The scripts you might want to run are:

<RegisterSystemDLLs>

<ResetUserShellFolders> - don't run this one if you've made your own custom changes by moving anything of the items shown in the screenshot below from their defaults.

<FixIEAndWindowsShell>

They should be run one at a time using the "Run Scripts" section.

Other thoughts

I know you tried setting folder options to:

Folder Options > View, the "launch folder windows in a separate process" box is not ticked.

Maybe try toggling it back, rebooting then check for that high RAM usage explorer.exe again. If it's still there toggle the setting again! You never know your luck....

Hello there! I've stumbled in here searching for a solution to the same problem called out in the thread title. Perusing through these pages I can see you guys are a bit more computer savvy than I am. This issue also began with me in late October.

My laptop is pretty barebones, pretty much used only for internet access and record storage. Not much is installed in the way of programs - MS Word, Excel and a couple of non-internet database programs. This machine is not used for gaming or any on-line functions such as streaming music, skype, or anything like that.

Can I get a summary in layman's terms of where you're at with this problem? Is there any information I can provide or activity I can try to help compare/confirm whats going on? My frustration is to the point of having the whole computer reformatted - something I really don't want to do. With a similar issue, I hope I can contribute something.

My equipment: Win 7 Home Premium, 64 bit, 4 gig RAM, Dell Inspiron laptop. 14 months old.

Never did get to pin it down. Having two (microsoft signed) explorer.exe's isn't much to worry about and can be normal but if one of those shows very high RAM usage then you might have a problem.

If you like you could upload a log as requested in Post #16 but using the scan settings described in Post #26

Maybe comparing your log with Afrim's might help.
