Chkdsk utility is misbehaving!

What parameters does the chkdsk utility use for its two options? Is it may be
1) /f
2) /f/r ?
This is because for a disk check I've got to use command prompt before booting into Windows as my chkdsk utility refuses to do a check at startup for some reason. In regedit the default value of BootExecute is set at autocheck autochk * - as it should be apparently. I don't know what else could be wrong.
sfc /scannow doesn't report any errors and computer seems to be ok. So why is this utility not doing its job?. grrrr.....

Minnie what you are referring to are the "switches" in a chkdsk run see this my friend it is the list of "switches" you can use in chkdsk I usually run /f & or /r if necessary. Disk Check

As a matter of course I always run sfc before I go there SFC /SCANNOW : Run in Command Prompt at Boot

I 've had to go away and am sorry for delaying my thanks to you for putting me right on *switches*, Confusion Therapist!!
Would you also know of another way I could run chkdsk at boot other than scheduling a session from Windows? I've also tried using command prompt (administrator) in Windows to book chkdsk at restart, but NO WAY, it would NOT run, God knows only why.

No problems Minnie now I think we may have more than a little problem if chkdsk will not run.

If you ran it from the command prompt exactly as the tutorial set out that is
"chkdsk" (space) C: (space) /f (space) /r then there should not be a problem .

One thing you can try to do is run it in safe mode - power up while tapping F8 then proceed as per command prompt as admin (right click and choose that option). If that does not work then as I said there is something quite wrong because safe mode only loads the very essential files for Windows.

In that case you could run some malware scans and the ones we usually advise are these

http://www.superantispyware.com/
http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/
ADW download from bleeping computer delete any rubbish found with the malware scans
NB if you are using Kaspersky security it will flag the ADW as malware - just ignore it I have Kaspersky and that is what I do.

These should clear up quite a bit of rubbish if it is there because no dedicated security suite in infallible

Following that if the problem is still around then run this
TDSSKiller Free Download | Rootkit Remova | Kaspersky Lab US it will look for rootkits

So if this still does not work then I think you will need to run a bootable disk / stick malware scan and the obvious one to me is this How to record Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 to a USB device and boot a computer from it you will of course need t make a bootable disk or stick and change the BIOS boot order to the optical (disk) or the stick (USB) personally I prefer a disk but the choice is yours.

To make that disk or stick the instructions are in that link.

Anyway start with the basic stuff and work your way through my instructions confusing as they might seem

You are a a great Therapist and I'll have my hands full to-morrow doing all those checks! Hopefully I'll find a reason for this problem and I'll then let you know. Cheers!

Well the least I can do for a fellow Pom LOL!! I was born in a village called Forest Row in East Sussex last lived at Eastbourne before coming out here and haven't regretted one second of it

Wow.. quite a big jump from Eastbourne to NSW! Rather understandable one can't feel excessive homesickness for Eastbourne which is not a terribly exciting place - I spent a couple of days there once and never felt a burning wish to return Glad you've found a good new life where you are. Bournemouth is pleasant enough and to-day it's freezing under a mantle of snow!
Yesterday I tried to fit as many of the checks you suggested into gaps of my work. No major malware has been found by the various apps but I've still got to run the Kapersky removal kit. Not being able to run chkdsk even from safe mode, I remembered the Win/ 7 Repair disc and was at last able to run chkdsk from its command prompt option. It ran for 5 hours and found various errors/violations. I forgot to write much down as I was shattered by then. Now command prompt allows me to check the C: drive from safe mode again, though scheduling it from within full Windows is still hopeless, but never mind, I'm happy enough being able to run it from somewhere else like safe mode. Best thanks to you for having helped!

It doesn't matter so much about the findings Minnie just glad it did find something because when those scans find nothing it becomes very frustrating and the hunt goes on. But it will be good to see a=what the Kaspersky comes up with which of course it may not but at least it eliminates some potential threat/s possibilities.

AS for your cool weather I could do with some right now as we have ben sweltering under 35 - 40C temps and it becomes very hard to take some days.

The old country well I have been back three times now and find it very claustrophobic especially on the roads and streets. But after being out here from 1978 and having vast amounts of room to move around in and my house on 3 acres it is no wonder.
