Missing / damaged files in Win 7

This all started when I got the following when I opened a window for Windows Update. It said:
#elementModuleHeaderText#and then there was a button (which normally has text in it) that was completely blank.
#actionCustomInstallImportantText#
#actionCustomInstallOptionalText#

Some were CODEXs for videos and were listed as over 13 yrs old. I know I don't care about them.
Some others were:
rdpclipMy Diagnosis is I'm missing some data file somewhere or maybe a registry entry.

M/$oft wanted $150 to load me up with a virus and crudware program and monitoring plan that would "most likely" fix the problem. I declined.
