Slow shutdown and boot; Short DST failed

Product Name: Hp g72 notebook pc
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)
Laptop was running smoothly until five days ago. At that time began to freeze up various applications including live mail and others. I have run malware and virus checks with no problems identified. When I shut down and restart it takes about 10 minutes for shutdown and about 15 minutes for start up. On start up I went to F2 to check start up characteristics. ran start up test, run-in test, system tuneup. All three showed failure of the Short DST. Failure ID: RSPN3X-5617HE-XD003G-60UG03. (I'm not sure if the zeros indicated are zeros or the letter O). I tried a system restore but unfortunately my restore dates did not go back far enough.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Can you suggest any other things that I should check? Do you need more information? From the nature of these questions, it is probably clear that my expertise in this area is quite limited. Thanks for your help.

Means your hard drive is failing and needs to be replaced.
