Saving space
My machine's HD rapidly filling up.
I'm thinking of compressing this drive to save space as the attachment shows this option.
What's the practical implications when backing up, installing, deleting...etc.?

In my opinion that is not the way to go. If everything is compressed and you want to read a file etc, it takes a lot of time to open. If must be restored to normal size first.

You've still got about 30 percent of that drive free.
I wouldn't expect any speed issues with that drive until that figure got down to at least 10 percent. Maybe even farther.
You may have something odd going on with your applications or configuration that is causing space to be used up faster than necessary--junk of one type or another. You could download Tree Size Free to see exactly what is taking up the space.
I agree entirely with Rich. New drive space is about $50 per terabyte. Your drive is only 1/2 terabyte in size. You've got a desktop PC, so in all likelihood you can simply install a new large drive alongside your existing drive and use it for storage only.
Compression is a complication. I'd avoid it other than as an absolute last resort.

Download and run Treesize Free, see what it tells you about disk utilization. There may be a lot of space that can be reclaimed.

As was already said, compression is not a good idea. You must have a lot of user data because a normal OS is under 30GBs. I would move the lesser used data outboard on a 2TB USB3 disk ($69). Also check your shadowstorage. The command is:
vssadmin list shadowstorage

I agree compression is a No No.
Only you know what you want to keep on that drive.
What anti virus program do you use?
